Everyone interested in this topic is welcome to participate.

Dates

19-24 May 2025 (6 days / 5 nights)

Description

This field trip will provide a broad overview of glaciovolcanic interactions in Iceland and related features which can be found all over the country. Iceland is the ideal place to study glaciovolcanism. On average, 20-30 volcanic eruptions occur in Iceland every century, 50% of these eruptions take place beneath glaciers. One of the best-known examples of recent years is the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption which impacted global air traffic due to volcanic ash and generated glacial outburst floods (jökulhlaups) damaging nearby infrastructure. This field trip will focus on glaciovolcanic formations and processes in south and southwest Iceland and consists of 5 full days in the field. We will start our trip around the Reykjanes Peninsula to see pillow lavas and a subglacially formed volcano (Day 1) before heading towards the area around Eyjafjallajökull and Þórsmörk (Days 2-3). We will have the chance to stop at the Gígjökull outlet glacier, impacted by subglacial lava propagation in 2010, and Steinholtsjökull with its impressive proglacial lake. Furthermore, we will discuss glacial influences on volcanic eruptions and landscape evolution while hiking in the Þórsmörk area. Day 4 will focus on glaciological features, explored during a glacier hike at Sólheimajökull, one of the outlet glaciers originating from Mýrdalsjökull. The last two days (Days 5-6) will provide the opportunity to further explore the area around Mýrdalsjökull and continue towards the largest ice cap, Vatnajökull.

Fitness level

Medium – Participants will have to walk over uneven terrain for several kilometers, and must be prepared to be outside for hours in any weather. Day 3 involves a hike on steep, exposed terrain.

Registration fee

The total cost of 190,000 ISK (ca. 1,300 EUR) per person covers transport in vans, accommodation (in shared cabins), a glacier tour at Sólheimajökull, and transportation in special 4×4 vehicles (Days 2-3). Participants will pay for their own meals. All cabins will be equipped with a kitchen and provide the possibility to prepare food. We will make sure to have sufficient stops at grocery stores. Options to have dinner at nearby places also exist. Flights to/from Iceland and accommodation before/after the workshop are not included in the price.

Registration

Please register via email to Tryggvi (t.unnsteinsson.23@abdn.ac.uk) with the following information.

Participants are asked to indicate their full name, degree and current affiliation (if existing), and preferred email-address. We also ask that participants provide a brief statement on their scientific background and why the workshop is of interest to them.

Registration deadline

14 February 2025

Code of conduct

All participants must acknowledge and adhere to the IAVCEI and IACS codes of conduct during the workshop.
IAVCEI: https://www.iavceivolcano.org/code-of-conduct-for-iavcei-meetings-and-events/
IACS: https://cryosphericsciences.org/about/objectives/

The Volcano-Ice Interactions Commission (VIIC), a joint commission of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) and the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS), is organizing an in-person workshop in Iceland in May 2025.
