IAVCEI\/IACS VIIC Seminar: Tuya Talks by Alastair Hodgetts and Ben Edwards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 14th September, 2021 | 6a PDT | 9a EDT | 2p BST | 10p JST | 3a HST<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alastair Hodgetts | University of Birmingham | The Th\u00f3r\u00f3lfsfell tuya, South Iceland \u2013 A new type of basaltic glaciovolcano<\/p>\n\n\n\n This talk will examine the first description and interpretation of Th\u00f3r\u00f3lfsfell, a basaltic tuya on the southern flank of Tindfjallaj\u00f6kull central volcano, S. Iceland. This asymmetrical, effusion-dominated glaciovolcano is constructed of an unusual set of lithofacies, unlike other tuyas described elsewhere, and displays no evidence for substantial and sustained meltwater accumulation. The atypical eruptive and glacio-hydrological conditions responsible will be explored and comparisons to other effusion-dominated tuyas (in Iceland and elsewhere) will allow us to question whether effusion-dominated tuyas are perhaps more diverse and varied than currently thought? A criterion for identifying other Th\u00f3r\u00f3lfsfell-type tuyas will be outlined and compared and contrasted to the \u2018classic\u2019 tuya model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ben Edwards | Dickinson College | Trouble with tuyas? Some thoughts on scholarship and definitions for the \u2018new\u2019 science of glaciovolcanism<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although scientists in the early 1900\u2019s first recognized that some volcanic deposits in Iceland and British Columbia likely formed by volcano-ice interactions, definitions and classifications for these curious deposits have followed more slowly. For example, the now-standard term \u2018glaciovolcanism\u2019 was only first used in a publication in 2002.
